Mass Protest in Thessaloniki Shows Solidarity With Palestine Amid Gaza Crisis

Hundreds of demonstrators marched through the streets of Thessaloniki on Monday night in a powerful show of solidarity with the Palestinian people, as tensions continue to escalate in Gaza.

The protest, which began in the city center and stretched along Egnatia Street, saw participants carrying a massive Palestinian flag, chanting slogans such as “Free Palestine” and “Stop the genocide.” The demonstration was peaceful, drawing a wide cross-section of Thessaloniki’s population, including students, activists, trade unions, and members of the local Palestinian community.

Waving Palestinian flags and holding signs denouncing Israeli military actions, the demonstrators demanded an immediate ceasefire and international action to stop what they called “systematic war crimes” by Israel.

“This is not just about politics—it’s about human rights,” said Dimitris Kalogirou, a protester and local teacher. “We can’t stand by while people in Gaza are being killed and displaced. Greece must raise its voice louder.”

The protest comes amid a new wave of Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip, resulting in high civilian casualties and widespread destruction. International rights groups have called the situation dire, urging governments to push for an end to hostilities.

Despite rain and a heavy police presence, spirits remained high throughout the march, with chants echoing through Thessaloniki’s central avenues well into the night. No violent incidents were reported.

Greece’s government has issued general calls for de-escalation but has faced criticism from domestic activists for what they describe as a muted response to Israel’s actions. Several Greek left-wing and student organizations have announced plans for ongoing actions and awareness campaigns throughout the week.

Thessaloniki, a city known for its long history of resistance movements and multicultural identity, has often played a key role in political demonstrations. Monday’s march reinforced that legacy, with organizers vowing to “continue standing on the right side of history.”
